Metal relief showing Jane (Yane) Sandanski, 1872-1915.
A rebel and later Ottoman politician, Sandanski was a leading figure in the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (IMARO). Voivode of the Serres revolutionary district, he led one of the Organization’s most powerful bands and championed its federalist wing, favouring cooperation among the region’s peoples and autonomy within a Balkan federation. After the Young Turk revolution (c. 1908) he pursued Macedonia’s rights through legal politics, co-founding the People’s Federative Party. Assassinated in the Pirin mountains by political rivals.
