WHITE DAWNS

“White Dawns” is a collection of poems authored by Kocho Ratsin (1908–1943) and one of the earliest collections written in an emerging Macedonian literary language. His poems were immediately banned after their 1939 publication for their portrayal of an exploited and impoverished Macedonian peasantry in the Yugoslav kingdom. Kocho’s focus on Macedonian cultural identity increasingly angered authorities who viewed such expressions as subversive to state order. He is widely known as the father of modern Macedonian literature.
